Pennsylvania House, Local Government Committee, will meet with congressmen Adolph (Marple & Springfield Reps) and O’Neill (Southampton Rep)

to discuss their respective bills, HB 2085 and HB 1237 (see links below).  The meeting is scheduled as an opportunity for the committee members to familiarize

themselves with all aspects of the issue(s) and the bills.

The congressmen will present their case for submitting their respective bills and the committee members

will have an opportunity to have any questions or concerns answered.

The Committee will, ultimately, say “YEA” or “NAY” to whether the legislation goes any further.

A CROWD IS CRITICAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An audience will provide:

• Motivation for the congressmen to “sell” their legislation to the Committee

• Making an impression on the Committee and send the message that a groundswell of constituents are “mad as hell and not going to take it anymore” with no intention of “going away”!  This is the most important opportunity to make a showing since the billboard campaign began.

Please make every effort to attend and to bring a family member, friend, neighbor . . . .  if they can fog a mirror, bring ‘em along.  If you need a ride/s, let us know.  We’ll make sure everyone can get there.  If necessary, we may charter a bus or rent a van.  Directions, transportation plans, etc. will be provided.

This is a rare opportunity to carry our message to people whose opinions can make a difference.

The meetings begin at 7:00pm but the Haverford residents are given an opportunity to speak around 9:30pm.  Hearty attendance shows our united opposition to the Bartkowski billboard proposal and supports our commissioners.

If you are a resident in close proximity to any of the proposed sites and you have not addressed the Zoning Board already, please consider attending a meeting and communicating your concerns.  Include pictures and approximate distance from the proposed site.  Speak to the health, welfare and safety issues as well as other concerns.  If you are shy about public speaking, you will only be supported by your fellow residents.

Our fourth annual egg hunt will be held on Saturday, March 20 (rain date Sunday, March 21) at Steel Field located on Steel Road.  The hunt is FREE for all children up to age 11.  Bring your own basket to collect all those surprise-filled eggs!  The egg drop begins at 11:00 a.m. but come early to participate in the other activities.

There will be charity raffles benefiting Alex’s Lemonade Stand, face painting, soft pretzels, and even a visit from the Easter Bunny. Don’t forget your camera!

Communities that apply for recycling grants are being required to initiate curbside leaf and yard waste recycling programs or risk losing grant money that the Township earns by recycling glass, plastic, aluminum, steel cans, and newspaper.  The amount of grant money awarded will not increase from leaf and yard waste collection.  To comply with the new requirements, Haverford Township will begin Yard Waste Curb Side Collection on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, and will be collected each Wednesday, until October 27, 2010.

Yard Waste Collection:

Brush, leaves, and branches. Branches and brush must not be more than one-and-a-half inches in diameter, must be less than 3 feet long, and must be tied together.  Bundle them securely with twine or rope.  Do not use wire.  All yard waste must be in brown biodegradable bags or trash cans that can be easily lifted (less than 40lbs). Plastic bags cannot be used and WILL NOT be collected.  Yard waste must be at your collection point by 6:30 AM.

Unacceptable Material:

Litter/Trash/Garbage

Kitty Litter/Pet Manure

Plastic bags and containers excess of 40 lbs.

Branches over 3 feet in length / Branches over 1 ½ inches in diameter.

Holiday Schedule:

If your collection day falls on or after a holiday, yard waste collection will be done the following week.

Why Yard Waste Composting?

Nearly two million tons of yard waste such as leaves, grass clippings and brush are produced in Pennsylvania each year. Until 1988, much of this yard waste went into Pennsylvania landfills. Then in 1988, the Pennsylvania Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act (Act 101) became law. Act 101 set a goal of reducing Pennsylvania’s municipal waste disposal by 25 percent by 1997. It also requires more than 400 communities to collect yard waste for composting and prohibits landfills from accepting truckloads of yard waste for disposal.

Yard waste can be easily composted to produce beneficial products such as soil conditioners or mulch. Yard waste composting is a sensible solid waste management alternative for Pennsylvania municipalities.

The State Law:

Section 1501 of PA Act 101 stipulates the requirements for all households and commercial, institutional and municipal establishments in mandated communities to separate leaf waste for collection. (A mandated community is any municipality with 5,000 or more residents). Compliance with Act 101, therefore, means that in mandated communities, leaf waste is not to be thrown out with household waste or burned as a means of disposal. Leaf waste is defined in Act 101 as “leaves, garden residues, shrubbery and tree trimmings, and similar material, but not including grass clippings. In addition, Section 1501(c)(2) of the Act requires mandated communities to have a scheduled day, at least once per month, during which separated materials are to placed at the curbside for collection.

Thank you for your membership in Hilltop Civic Association.

Our current board has worked tirelessly for many years to find new ideas
for programs and to continue popular events, but it is time for them to
step down and afford new members an opportunity to become more involved.
WE NEED YOU to ensure our association will continue in 2009 and future
years.  We know there are many innovative, committed members who could
become an integral part of the board.    It does not take a huge
commitment.  There are only five meetings a year, we have faithful
volunteers who support or chair our events, and current board members
will be available to provide guidance to new board members.

Our civic association sponsors events such as the 4th of July
parade/program, Santa visit, Garden contest, Holiday lights, Education
grants and Social functions. We support Hilltop baseball league, Manoa
and Bon Air Fire Companies, Town-watch, the library, and Darby Creek
Valley Association to name just a few.  We also partner with our
commissioner to keep members apprised and involved when issues of
interest arise in our neighborhood.

It’s a great way to get to know your neighbors and to make our community
stronger than ever!   So DON’T DELAY.  Contact a board member today for

our civic association and how you can help.

It’s coming — single stream recycling

Starting in January 2009, you will be able to put glass (clear, green, brown, blue, fuchsia, etc.), cans (steel, tin & aluminum), plastics (#1 through 7  – Rev 1/28/09) and paper (newspapers, cardboard, cereal boxes, junk mail, etc.) all in one container!!!   Initially you will just use your current containers.

It is anticipated that by making recycling easier, more people will recycle.  Not only will this be great for the environment, it will also reduce our trash tonnage (saving us money for trash-to-steam with the County) and increase the money we receive in recycling grants!

Leaves, Shrubs and Tree Branches

Haverford Township residents will have the opportunity to drop off leaves, shrubs and tree branches (no wider than 4 inches in diameter) on the last Saturday of each month, beginning September 27, 2008.
