 Remember when you were a kid, and the whole family would squeeze into the car and go to the drive-in for a movie?  Well here’s a modern day twist, a FREE movie under the stars at Steel Field.   ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ is a great animated movie for all ages.  Come see the tale of a creative teenage inventor and a town where food falls from the sky like rain!

Bring a blanket  or chairs and get ready for a fun night.   Snacks and drinks will be available for sale.   If the movie must be cancelled due to rain, we’ll post it here and at the field.   (no rain date planned)

Your membership dues help to sponsor great community events like this one.  If you haven’t paid your dues yet for 2010, visit our membership table at the field.  If you can’t make the movie, you can mail your $10 check payable to Hilltop Civic Association c/o Susan Revelle, 1204 Fairview Avenue, Havertown, PA 19083 (membership form attached)   Our minimal annual dues for the whole family is only slightly more than the cost of one ticket at a movie theater.

EVERY VOICE COUNTS

Hearty attendance from all residents in all five communities shows our united opposition and supports our commissioners.  Residents are strongly encouraged to attend these hearings and express your opinion of the proposed billboards ESPECIALLY those residents in close proximity of the proposed sites are especially important to defending our community.  Pictures and approximate distance from the proposed sites and how these signs could/will impact our quality of life, health,
welfare and safety are extremely helpful.  If you are shy about public speaking, you will only be supported by your fellow residents and Haverford Zoning Board allows you to testify as many times as you want. Here’s an article from the last Zoning Board Hearing in Haverford:

ordinance thrown out due to a technical error in procedure…..Marple won!

Our top four winners receive a $25 award and a special sign displayed on their properties into the fall.  Special thanks to Sophia DiTrolio and her committee (Martha Lawless, Lee Hamilton, Jackie Engler, Nancy Ryan, and Kristin Stevens)  for coordinating the contest and thanks to our participants for beautifying our neighborhood!  (see additional pictures in our Photo Gallery)

Specifically, the composting program allows the Public Works staff to collect the leaves in the fall and process them throughout the winter and spring – creating excellent mulch material. Since the fall of 2009, over 6,000 tons of leaf and yard waste have been collected at the municipal recycling yard.

The program is working very well and the final composted/mulched material is now available for FREE to township residents.

Residents can pick up the material at the recycling yard or any of the locations identified below, or pay a nominal delivery fee of $40 for up to a truck load of the material. The Township composting site is located at the end of Hilltop Road which is off of Old West Chester Pike.

Additional information and directions can be obtained by calling the Haverford Township Public Works Department at (610-446-1000, extension 263).

By the end of the summer, any remaining compost material from the previous year will be used in the flower beds and other landscaping throughout the township and will also be available for sale to private contractors.

The township plans to continue expanding this program in order to reduce the trash stream – which will be beneficial to our operational cost and help accomplish our goal of a green friendly township.

At the May 27th meeting, retirements were announced by Mary Anne Degnan & Cecelia Gerard, Co-presidents, and Carol Kelly, Vice President.  Our heartfelt thanks go to Mary Anne, Cecelia, and Carol for their 20+ years of service to the Hilltop Civic Association.  Their dedication has resulted in many years of neighborhood programs and events which have benefitted Hilltop residents.

Amy Clevens was elected as our new president.  Amy has become very active in the HCA over the past year.  She chaired our first annual Halloween Decorating Contest, is a constant volunteer for events, and brings much enthusiasm and new ideas to the board.  Welcome, Amy!

Susan Revelle continues as Secretary and Membership Director.  Tim Lawless remains as Treasurer.  The Vice President spot is vacant.   If you think you may be interested in this position, please contact a board member for more information.

We welcome members to attend our meetings and to get involved in the various events we sponsor throughout the year.    Member participation helps to energize our association and to foster new ideas.

Communities that apply for recycling grants are being required to initiate curbside leaf and yard waste recycling programs or risk losing grant money that the Township earns by recycling glass, plastic, aluminum, steel cans, and newspaper.  The amount of grant money awarded will not increase from leaf and yard waste collection.  To comply with the new requirements, Haverford Township will begin Yard Waste Curb Side Collection on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, and will be collected each Wednesday, until October 27, 2010.

Yard Waste Collection:

Brush, leaves, and branches. Branches and brush must not be more than one-and-a-half inches in diameter, must be less than 3 feet long, and must be tied together.  Bundle them securely with twine or rope.  Do not use wire.  All yard waste must be in brown biodegradable bags or trash cans that can be easily lifted (less than 40lbs). Plastic bags cannot be used and WILL NOT be collected.  Yard waste must be at your collection point by 6:30 AM.

Unacceptable Material:

Litter/Trash/Garbage

Kitty Litter/Pet Manure

Plastic bags and containers excess of 40 lbs.

Branches over 3 feet in length / Branches over 1 ½ inches in diameter.

Holiday Schedule:

If your collection day falls on or after a holiday, yard waste collection will be done the following week.

Why Yard Waste Composting?

Nearly two million tons of yard waste such as leaves, grass clippings and brush are produced in Pennsylvania each year. Until 1988, much of this yard waste went into Pennsylvania landfills. Then in 1988, the Pennsylvania Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act (Act 101) became law. Act 101 set a goal of reducing Pennsylvania’s municipal waste disposal by 25 percent by 1997. It also requires more than 400 communities to collect yard waste for composting and prohibits landfills from accepting truckloads of yard waste for disposal.

Yard waste can be easily composted to produce beneficial products such as soil conditioners or mulch. Yard waste composting is a sensible solid waste management alternative for Pennsylvania municipalities.

The State Law:

Section 1501 of PA Act 101 stipulates the requirements for all households and commercial, institutional and municipal establishments in mandated communities to separate leaf waste for collection. (A mandated community is any municipality with 5,000 or more residents). Compliance with Act 101, therefore, means that in mandated communities, leaf waste is not to be thrown out with household waste or burned as a means of disposal. Leaf waste is defined in Act 101 as “leaves, garden residues, shrubbery and tree trimmings, and similar material, but not including grass clippings. In addition, Section 1501(c)(2) of the Act requires mandated communities to have a scheduled day, at least once per month, during which separated materials are to placed at the curbside for collection.

Our current board has worked tirelessly for many years to find new ideas
for programs and to continue popular events, but it is time for them to
step down and afford new members an opportunity to become more involved.
WE NEED YOU to ensure our association will continue in 2009 and future
years.  We know there are many innovative, committed members who could
become an integral part of the board.    It does not take a huge
commitment.  There are only five meetings a year, we have faithful
volunteers who support or chair our events, and current board members
will be available to provide guidance to new board members.

Our civic association sponsors events such as the 4th of July
parade/program, Santa visit, Garden contest, Holiday lights, Education
grants and Social functions. We support Hilltop baseball league, Manoa
and Bon Air Fire Companies, Town-watch, the library, and Darby Creek
Valley Association to name just a few.  We also partner with our
commissioner to keep members apprised and involved when issues of
interest arise in our neighborhood.

It’s a great way to get to know your neighbors and to make our community
stronger than ever!   So DON’T DELAY.  Contact a board member today for
